How are Larfeuille products made?
Here we answer frequently asked questions about the website or Instagram account. Feel free to ask your own.
1. The idea and the design
This is the most creative stage, we think by looking at existing traditional forms, but also by drawing inspiration from architectural forms or from other worlds than leather goods (jewelry, furniture design, etc.)
2. The prototype
Once the shape is chosen, we create a prototype under production conditions (this allows us to evaluate the total manufacturing time), that is, entirely by hand and swallows the real material. We establish a pattern, that is, a template for the leather cutouts, and try different solutions if the object includes metal parts. The almost final object is created.
3. The final model tested
Once the object is made, we test it for several days or weeks in normal or slightly more extreme living conditions to see its possible weaknesses or possible improvements.
After this step, the product is ready to be marketed.
Where do we buy the leathers we use?
For the moment, we only source premium leathers of French and sometimes European origin from the best tanneries recognized for their expertise and certified for their environmental responsibility.
Most of our skins come from Normandy and Brittany and are raised to produce milk and meat, thus guaranteeing their traceability.
These so-called premium raw hides are then tanned (softened and colored) in an exceptional tannery in Tuscany which supplies the most exclusive brands.
What is vegetable tanned leather?
This is the tanning method that involves bathing the cleaned hides in baths of tree bark and natural fats. It is a slow process, but it guarantees an incomparable quality of the leather patina.
What is saddle stitch?
This is a technique that uses a thread (linen in this case) and two needles at each end. Each hand-stitched stitch creates a loop that makes the seam stronger and easier to repair.
Why and how do we reuse cutting or slitting waste?
Leather is expensive, so to avoid wasting it, we are constantly thinking about reusing it. Either for small pieces or by imagining "up-cycling", that is to say, giving additional value to the object created through a creative approach. For example, we have imagined a series of handles and bag handles braided using scraps of unused leather. We have also imagined seats or a bag made solely from split leather (the part that remains when the skin is refined).
Can I return a product if it doesn't suit me?
In most cases, yes, if it has not been used or if it has a defect. However, not all personalized products can be returned.
How long does it take to make a Larfeuille piece?
This obviously depends on its size and the complexity of its assembly. A simple card holder in 4 parts takes about 1.5 hours to make, a So bag more than 5 hours.
How do I care for my Larfeuille bag or items?
We recommend natural and, above all, silicone-free maintenance milks or creams.
How do I know when I will receive my order?
If you ordered in-store, you'll receive an email or text message as soon as your order is ready. If you ordered online, you'll receive an email and a tracking number (often UPS).
Does vegetable tanned leather mark?
Yes, and that's what makes it beautiful and unique over time. Most of the marks disappear by gently rubbing it with a piece of felt in circles. The patina, flexibility, and character come from your use.
